Waste Water Bulletins and Information
On 12 May 2008, we replaced the tank in lift station #3. Our system is working and the new #1 lift station tank is continuing to pay dividends in reduced pumping costs and lower lagoon levels. Before that tank was replaced we were pumping thousands of gallons per week of groundwater in addition to the wastewater. The groundwater inflow issue is still present in two other tanks and those tanks should also be replaced within the next few years.
As you may remember hearing at past general membership meetings, our wastewater system is old and not in line with desires of the Department of Environmental Quality. While DEQ is not currently forcing us to make immediate changes, they are now saying that we should enter into an agreement with them detailing when improvements to our system will be made.
DEQ’s main concern is our wastewater lagoon. It is not properly lined, has vegetation growing in it and does not have rip-rap on the dikes. Correcting these issues with the lagoon will take some time, probably at least several weeks of construction, and will probably require building a second lagoon to handle the wastewater while the primary lagoon is undergoing improvement. This will be a major capital improvement project and you can expect to hear some cost estimates at our upcoming general membership meeting.
In closing, if you have not had your septic tank pumped out and inspected in the past 3 to 5 years, please have that done soon. It is critically important that your septic tank be functioning properly to avoid costly damage to our wastewater collection system. Please let us know when you have your tank pumped so that we can log that information.
